Tehran, Astana agree on closer ties, ink five MOUs

TEHRAN- Iran and Kazakhstan inked five agreements on cooperation in transportation, banking, tourism, employment and also livestock quarantine, president.ir reported on Thursday.

The agreements aimed at expanding bilateral economic relations were signed in Kazakhstan's capital, Astana, on December 22 in the presence of Kazakh President Nursultan Nazarbayev and Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, who arrived in Astana on Wednesday night on the second leg of his tour of the Central Asia.

One of the agreements was signed by Central Bank of Iran (CBI) Governor Valiollah Seif and National Bank of Kazakhstan Governor Daniyar Akishev on banking cooperation including establishment of brokerage ties and credit lines between the two countries, according to the official website of CBI.  

Another agreement was on establishing a joint dual-modal transportation company that could lead to the creation of a new transport corridor connecting Iran’s southern ports to the upper parts of Central Asia - and even possibly Russia and China, Press TV reported.

The agreement was signed between the Islamic Republic of Iran Shipping Line (IRISL) and Kazakhstan’s KTZ Express – a subsidiary of the country’s national railways company – Kazakhstan Railways.
